How to convert M4A to MP3
Voice memos, WhatsApp audio and iTunes downloads all arrive as M4A. Plenty of car stereos and older players still only want MP3.
Convert it
- Open the converter and go to the "Convert a file" tab.
- Add the
.m4afile. MP3 is already selected. - Convert. Encoding shows a running percentage — a long recording takes a moment.
The same route handles AAC, OGG, FLAC, WAV and Opus. Choose WAV instead of MP3 if you need uncompressed audio for editing.
Pulling the audio out of a video
Add an .mp4 or .mov file and you will be offered MP3 audio track or WAV audio track. The soundtrack is decoded and written out on its own, with the video discarded.
This depends on the browser being able to decode the video's audio codec. In practice Chrome and Safari handle the AAC audio inside most MP4 and MOV files. Firefox is less reliable with AAC for licensing reasons. If it fails you will get a clear message rather than a broken file.
To be explicit about the limitation: this extracts an existing audio track. It does not convert between video formats, which needs far heavier machinery than a browser tab can reasonably carry.
About quality
MP3 output is encoded at 192 kbps, which is a deliberate middle ground — transparent enough for speech and general listening, while keeping files reasonable.
One thing worth understanding: converting M4A to MP3 is lossy to lossy. The original was already compressed by discarding audio information, and MP3 encoding discards more, working from what survived. The result is slightly worse than the original, always. For speech and casual listening this is inaudible. For music you care about, keep the M4A and play it on something that supports it.
Converting FLAC or WAV to MP3 is different — those are lossless originals, so the MP3 is the first generation of loss and sounds correspondingly better.
Tags and artwork are not carried over
Artist, album, track number and cover art live in metadata that this conversion does not reproduce, so the MP3 arrives with just a filename. For a handful of files, fill them in afterwards in your music player. For a large library, a dedicated desktop tool is a better instrument.
Long recordings
Encoding runs in your browser, so an hour-long recording takes real time and memory. The progress percentage keeps updating throughout. Very long files on an older phone may run the tab out of memory — splitting them first is the practical workaround.
